A Rose Is

A shy pink rose,
My father’s gift,
Grows all alone
Beside my step.

Sometimes it mirrors
A passing cloud
Of powder pink as
The sun goes down.

Sometimes its scent
Floats up to me,
Then down I’ve bent
To breathe deeply.

When I’m away
I remember and say,
“I stopped and smelled
a rose today.”
