The Saddest Day

When love came to stay,
It was the saddest day.

It would never leave
But separation would weave
A trembling web of hope
From year to year without relief.

When love came to stay
Each day was a sadder day.

It managed to remain
Each springtime and holiday
Nursing the living heart’s
Ragged hole and tortured ache.

Love came to stay
As each hair turned to gray

Like fading, turning leaves
On two firmly rooted trees
Always reaching for each other
Always separated by the breeze.

Love had come to stay.
